Civic Center Eats: Don’t Let This Be the Last!

Deluxe's Little Orange Rocket at Civic Center Eats

Don’t forget that today is the last scheduled Civic Center Eats of the season – but if YOU show up today, they’ll seriously consider extending CCE through September. You know you want MORE good street food through the fine Colorado Indian Summer that’s just now coming on, so show up today and let the organizers know!

A Trip with the Little Orange Rocket

On that note, let’s talk for a second about Deluxe Street Food’s Little Orange Rocket!  First off – the truck is gorgeous! Bright orange with a retro feel. I love this truck, but have shied away from dining there because of the limited veggie options. I mean,  I love mac n cheese, and the idea of fried truffle mac n cheese balls sounds divine, but it’s just been too damned hot for that. (Yes, I kid you not. They have fried mac n cheese balls on the menu. I can’t wait to try it!)  I’ve eyed their chicken bahn mi longingly – by all accounts it’s tasty as hell and I’m a bahn mi junky and prep them at home with some frequency.

Chicken Bahn Mi, Tofu Bahn Mi, and freaking divine fries.

But they never had a veg alternative – ’til now! Imagine my glee last week when I learned that the Little Orange Rocket was planning on showing up at CCE with some tofu on board  with the plan of slinging out some tofu bahn mi! I ordered one and was not disappointed. It was fresh, light, and tasty – something that I’ve noted before is sadly lacking at CCE.   Beware, though, if you’re a strict veg: these guys are not shy about the fish sauce. Make sure to order yours without if that’s a concern for you.  The only thing I’d change about this fine sandwich is to put the thing on the traditional baguette that makes bahn mi such a unique treat. The bahn mi is perhaps the best thing to come out of French Colonialism, and ditching the crusty yummy baguette in favor of the softer (and more prone to soggy) slider bun is a crying shame!

Anyway – I have no idea if they plan to make the tofu sandwich a regular feature, but I’ve got my fingers crossed. Regardless – you omnivores should check this truck out! The chicken bahn mi and the ceviche have both received rave reviews, and I can vouch personally for their french fries. <slurp!>

More news on the weekend that was later!
